“She
needs to have long hair” The most said statement coming from many black
men these days, and even more than that coming from many young black men. Today’s
media proclaims that if a black girl doesn't have long hair, then she’s not date-able, she’s not worth it, and she’s NOT PRETTY. Pictures, magazines, and tv
has made it clear that unless your crush looks like Gabrielle Union with long
black beautiful hair then she’s not worth the time or the effort.
That
being we have so many beautiful black Women destroying their natural
short and kinky hair to perm it out to be straight and long, and those who can’t
use the perm use tracks, weaves, wigs etc. Anything they can think of to make
their hair long, softer, and more attractive to black men. The trend continues
with up and coming young black girls. They can’t wait to hit the age of five
years old when they know Momma will say “baby’s at that age now to perm her
hair out”. She feels good in herself, knowing she won’t go to school and be
teased and bullied by the name napps. She looks forward to the day when the
name will be behind her, when her peers will forget that her hair was once kinky, and thick.
I
don’t like to blame it all on the media because they’re not all to be blamed.
Moms are to be blamed as well, instead of letting your babies know how
beautiful their natural hair is, you indulge them to the fact that one day they
can change it, and add to it. You set examples
of how they should be wearing their hair as you wear you’re fake hair. Taking
them to the beauty shops and letting them sit and watch as you pick from a set
of hair that you like, and you’re hairdresser puts them in.
Although
the natural movement is catching on. Some of our same sisters look down on our
natural hair, judge us and say they could never do it. We hope for the sake of our
babies, and the generation to come, you’ll soon be able to do what’s in the
best interests of your babies hair.
